25 Apr Young Actors Club
The Young Actors Club, running since January 2024, led by Helena, TA at South Harringay, has started the new term with the aim to produce a performance for the end of June.
Last term, students have been developing their acting skills through improv exercises and short scripts. Sessions have been interspersed with (drama) theory, drawing on Peter Brook and Paul Watzlawick, prompting the actors to explore questions such as ‘What is theatre?’ and ‘What is communication?’. Classes also involved introductions to the Greek Chorus and Shakespeare.
After workshopping the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, the actors unanimously voted to perform a Shakespeare play – an ambitious request when there are ten weeks to go. As a compromise, we decided to put together a Shakespeare-based piece that imagines the lives – the hopes and struggles – of Shakespeare characters in a contemporary setting.
