Last week, Year 3 enjoyed preparing and eating a delicious seasonal vegetable tart. The cooking session, which was part of their Design and Technology (DT) learning, focused on teaching practical skills using fresh, locally sourced produce.
The seasonal vegetable tart introduced the children to the joys of preparing their own food but also to emphasise the importance of using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
The activity began with a lesson on the different vegetables they would be using, including courgette, tomatoes, red peppers, and tomatoes that are all currently in season in the UK. We discussed the benefits of eating seasonal produce, explaining how it is not only more flavourful but also more nutritious and environmentally friendly.The children then practiced a variety of essential kitchen skills. They learned how to peel vegetables safely, chop them into pieces, snip basil with scissors, and grate cheese. Hopefully they can show off these skills at home!
