We want all of our children to develop a love of sports and physical activity. We believe PE should be fun; encouraging a lifelong engagement with sports, while also ensuring key skills and physical literacy are nurtured throughout a child’s journey in our school. These skills will be developed through a combination of individual and team pursuits, sports and activities.
Our PE curriculum, from years 1 – 6, is delivered by specialised sports coaches from the Rose Academy. The Academy’s skilled coaches enhance the quality, development & enjoyment of sport by delivering innovative, engaging and fun P.E lessons. Their unique style of teaching incorporates techniques brought in by REALPE and Val Sabin. Skills and sports are revisited regularly, as children move through the school, ensuring progress for all across a range of key sports and activities.
The curriculum includes a majority of lessons taught in break-out groups, creating a more interactive and personal PE lesson for each child – for this reason the curriculum is taught with two coaches in each session.
These local coaches also develop our key stage 2 school sports teams who regularly take part in inter-school competitions. Rose Academy has ensured an increase in our participation in competitions as well as improving the performance of our teams in these events. This has resulted in a noticeable increase in enthusiasm and participation in sport during other times of our school day such as before and after school clubs and lunchtimes. The Academy also has weekend and holiday programs, which our children are also encouraged to engage with.
We are extremely fortunate to have our own swimming pool on-site. Currently, all the children in year 5 go swimming once a week where they are taught to use a range of strokes effectively; swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres; perform self-rescue in different water-based situations. We recognise that some children have had very little experience with swimming and provide longer sessions for those children who need the additional support. We also provide a weekly lesson for year 3 children who have no experience of swimming lessons at all.
