We want all of the children that attend our school to have excellent emotional health and to feel safe and secure. We know that children learn best when they are happy. To this end we have a range of strategies to support our children’s emotional wellbeing.
We have a learning mentor who provides a variety of supportive services to our children in the Junior School. Children are able to discreetly discuss problems with her via her ‘mentor mail’ system. They can also discreetly report any concerns about bullying to her (or indeed any other staff member) and know that the concern will be dealt with promptly and sensitively.
If the school feels it may be beneficial for a child to spend some time exploring an issue that is affecting their emotional well being, and the parent/carer agrees, our learning mentor may work with a child one to one, over a set period of time.
Our learning mentor also works with small groups of children to solve social problems by providing them with a safe space to discuss their problems and come up with agreed solutions.
We have a school counsellor who works with us one day week. He uses play therapy techniques to support children who may need extra help because of a very specific issue, or personal event. They usually work with a child in one session a week for around 10 – 12 weeks. They only ever work with children one they have full and understanding and consent of the chid parent or guardian. We have seen the positive impact this work has had on many children in our schools.
