In Nursery children will consolidate speaking and listening skills and develop the foundations for the phonic work that starts in Reception through practical games and activities.
Systematic phonics is taught in Reception and Key Stage 1 using Read Write Inc. The majority of our children have a daily lesson of 20 minutes in which they learn the letters and sounds needed to read and write and apply this in practical contexts. Once children have completed the programme this time is used to focus on more complex spelling patterns.
Some of our children are selected to engage in the full hour version of the Read Write Inc program. They are identified as children who need the full program in order for them to reach the required standard of phonics by the end of key stage 1 and age expectations for reading by the end of year 2.
In key stage 2 children who need further consolidation will continue to be taught using Read Write Inc if necessary. We also have have a number of children who arrive from abroad with no English and have found an initial period of engaging in Rad Write Inc sessions as a useful springboard into English fluency.
The EYFS Curriculum is structured around a number of core books and children in nursery will become familiar with these through group reading, storytelling and role play. In Reception children also read with an adult on a one to one basis.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, whole class reading sessions take place daily with all children engaging collectively with a range of texts throughout the year. As well as teaching the skills of reading and comprehension , these sessions also focus on understanding, and applying grammatical concepts. They also seek to foster a real enjoyment and love of reading within the children.
In addition, ‘Guided Reading’ sessions take place daily for years 1-6 . Children read in groups at their instructional reading level. All children will bring home a levelled guided reading book to practise at home every day.
Children also have regular access to the school libraries to borrow books of their choice to bring home and read for pleasure. In addition to the school library in key stage 2, we use the Accelerated Reader programme to motivate and encourage children to read.
We expect all children to read at home with an adult every day to help support and consolidate the learning that takes place in school.
